The Delhi government on Thursday announced a hike in the salaries of guest teachers, pending the approval of Lieutenant Governor (LG) Najeeb Jung. According to the government officials, the almost 90 per cent hike will be valid for guest teachers who have cleared the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) .

Those guest teachers who have not yet cleared the CTET will still be able to enjoy a hike of up to 40 per cent. “From now on, guest teachers will get fixed monthly salaries like their permanent counterparts.

The Delhi Cabinet has approved a substantial hike in the salaries of 17,000 guest teachers. We have also approved eight casual leaves for those who have cleared the CTET,” said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

He added that the announcement awaits LG Jung’s nod, and if granted, the salary hike will be implemented from the coming month itself. There are nearly 17,000 guest teachers in government schools, out of whom, 2,000 have not cleared the CTET.

Welcoming the move, the guest teachers said the Delhi government should also fulfill its poll promise of granting them a permanent status. “I have been working as a guest teacher since 2013. I am not entitled to leaves like the regular teachers. During this stint, I was almost thrown out of the school when a permanent teacher was hired,” said Deepak Vashisht, 24.

“We are being paid on a daily basis. We don’t get paid for off days,” he said, adding that unlike permanent teachers at government schools, guest teachers get no salary for the months of May and June, when the schools remain shut for the summer break.
