BJP workers allegedly hurled stones at Chief Minister Harish Rawat's convoy on Friday when he was returning after meeting the family of a seven-year-old rape and murder victim in Haldwani even as police claimed it nabbed three persons allegedly involved in the crime.
Three persons allegedly involved in the heinous rape and murder of the minor have been arrested, Additional Director General of Police Ram Singh Meena said. Akhtar was arrested from Ludhiana in Punjab last night while Prempal and Naicy alias Foxy were arrested today from Kathgodam, he said.
Akhtar who hails from New Champaran has told the police that the trio took turns to rape the seven-year-old who died of profuse bleeding, the ADG said. However, Prempal and Naicy who both hail from Haldwani claimed they drank while Akhtar raped the girl.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Harish Rawat visited Haldwani in Nainital district on Friday to console the victim's family and assure them that justice will be done. Issuing orders to conduct the trial of the case in a fast track court, the chief minister said other similar cases be also tried in fast track courts to ensure quick delivery of justice.
A one man committee headed by Shailesh Bagoli has also been formed to examine the manner in which the police handled the case and the panel will submit its report within 10 days. When the Chief Minister was returning after meeting the victim's kin at her maternal uncle's place some persons allegedly BJP workers pelted his convoy with stones damaging the rear windscreen of his car, Meena said.
However, the chief minister was sitting in the front seat of the car and he escaped unhurt, the ADG said. Four persons involved in the stone pelting incident have also been nabbed and being interrogated.
