With Supreme Court's strong observation "why high court's order quashing an FIR against governor should not be set aside" rendering Madhya Pradesh governor Ram Naresh Yadav's position virtually untenable, Union home minister Rajnath Singh met President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday evening to apprise him of the developments.

Though Rajnath Singh, officiating as number one in the government in the absence of PM, remained tight lipped after meeting the President, sources said, it's almost curtains for Yadav, and the only question now remains is, whether he himself tenders resignation or waits for the withdrawal of President's pleasure, in other words, bear the ignominy of getting sacked by the BJP government.

Singh is understood to have discussed with the President the limited options the government has before it.

"That Mr Yadav will have go before completing his tenure is sure. It's only a matter of time and how," said home ministry sources.

Yadav was sworn in as governor of Madhya Pradesh on August 26, 2011 and his tenure will get over on August 25, 2016.

Officials in the know of the developments said a file on the whole episode along with Supreme Court observations is being made that will be forwarded to the attorney general Mukul Rohatgi for his opinion and then a decision could be taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in consultation with his senior colleagues, unless Yadav himself resigns.

The PM is on a visit abroad along with finance minister Arun Jaitley and is returning on July 13.

Sources added that the decision can wait for a couple of days as the situation is not akin to a constitutional crisis.

Why the BJP government is taking so long to remove Yadav when it took no time to sack several other untainted governors, however, remains a mystery.

As the Opposition cashed in on the Supreme Court order to attack the Modi government, the BJP took the short reprieve by saying that the ball is now in the CBI's court and as far as the party is concerned Vyapam is now a "closed chapter".

Both BJP and Congress welcomed the Supreme Court ordering a CBI probe.

Congress leader Digvijay Singh said he would "appeal" to the Governor to resign instead of demand his resignation. "The governor had fallen in bad company, so he will have to suffer".

Taking dig at the centre, he said the BJP soon after coming to power removed governors against whom there was no FIR, but chose to continue with those against whom there was an FIR.

Singh pleaded that students made accused in the case should be made prosecution witnesses rather than being imprisoned.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for "forgetting" his claim after assuming power last year that he won't allow any corruption, saying "Na khaoonga, na khane doonga (Won't be corrupt, nor allow corruption by others)."

"Prime Minister, your words should carry some weight. What happened to your pledge? Aap Rajasthan mein khane kyun de rahe hain? (Why are you allowing corruption in Rajasthan?) Why are you not bringing back Lalit Modi? Aap Shivraj Singh Chouhan ko khaane kyon de rahe hain? (Why are you allowing Shivraj Singh Chouhan's corruption)," he asked while speaking at the All India Mahila Congress executive in the AICC headquarter here.

But, the BJP was dismissive of the Opposition charges saying the court had endorsed the decision of chief minister Shivraj Singh. "In fact, the learned attorney general pointed out right in the beginning that we had made this application with the Madhya Pradesh High Court, we want a CBI inquiry, whether it is to be monitored or not by the court, that is a separate issue which may be seen later on," said BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli. The court has appreciated the stand of the attorney general, he said.
