The Delhi Police on Tuesday registered a case against unknown persons for allegedly threatening Gurmehar Kaur of rape. Kaur was trolled on social networking sites for her remarks against the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and had received rape threats post that. She had then written a complaint to Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) and is reportedly out of the National Capital.

"Kaur has not joined the investigation as of now. The identification process of persons who were threatening her is on. We are scanning the social networking sites to see who are the culprits," said Special Commissioner of Police, Dependra Pathak.

She withdrew from the campaign on Tuesday morning after being trolled. In one of her tweets on Tuesday (sic) she said "No statements from me, my family or my behalf. I request to be given privacy.

The Delhi Police is checking social media sites to see which account holders — including some anonymous ones — came out on the internet and sent her indecent messages and posts. It will then approach the heads of these social networking sites so as to identify the account holders.

After suffering all the internet abuse and the glaring spotlight Kaur withdrew from the protest on Tuesday morning. In one of her tweets (sic) she said "No statements from me, my family or my behalf. I request to be given privacy. Thank you."

Kaur had uploaded a picture of her which said #StudentsagainstABVP! In one of her previous uploads which was dated a year ago she had uploaded four pictures wherein she mentioned on how she was once going to stab a Muslim woman as she thought she was responsible for her father's death. But after her mother explained her that her father died in war and not because of Pakistan she understood the sentiment. Despite this being over a year old, Kaur was bullied on social media and threatened by various persons on Twitter and Facebook of dire consequences.

Later she was targeted by hundreds of people; some among them also threatening her with rape. Kaur then reached the office of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal and submitted a written complaint. She also showed Maliwal screenshots of various comments wherein men were threatening her with sexual assault.

Taking action on the complaint the Economics Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police registered a case under section 354A (making sexually coloured remarks, shall be guilty of the offence of sexual harassment), 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) and 67 (Punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) Information Technology Act.
