Congress protests over suspension of its 25 MPs; Sonia Gandhi calls it 'murder of democracy'

The Congress party on Tuesday staged a protest at the Gandhi statue within the Parliament premises. Leading the protest against suspension of 25 Congress MPs, Congress President Sonia Gandhi termed the move as 'murder of democracy'. 

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Monday suspended 25 MPs of Congress who were carrying placards and shouting slogans in the well of the house while pressing for resignation of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje over the Lalit Modi row and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over Vyapam scam.

Addressing the media, Sonia Gandhi said, "The way our MPs have been suspended, it is anti-democratic. It is a murder of democracy. It is government's duty to function the parliament."

Attacking government, Rahul Gandhi said, "The suspension of our 25 MPs is the symbol of what is being done all across the nation to farmers, students and all institutions of the county."

He further added, "They can throw us all out of the Parliament, we will not be deterred." 

Rahul Gandhi riterated that neither he nor the Congress was asking for the resignation of the ministers, it was the demand of the "people of India".

The suspended Congress MPs included BN Chandrappa, Santok Singh Chaudhary, AHK Choudhury, Sushmita Dev, Ninog Ering, R Dhruvanarayana, Gaurav Gogoi, G Sukender Reddy, Deepender Hooda, S Kodikunnil, SP Muddahanumegowda, Abhijit Mukherjee, Mullappally Ramachandran, KH Munniyappa, BV Nayak, Vincent Pala, MK Raghavan, Ranjeet Ranjan, CL Ruala, T Sahu, Rajee Satav, Ravneet Singh K Suresh, KC Venugopal and T Meinya.
