Wearing of helmet by two-wheeler riders will become compulsory in the union territory from tomorrow.

Chief Minister V Narayanasamy had in February last announced the decision to make mandatory wearing of helmet by the riders and pillion riders.

The decision was taken in view of rising fatal road accidents involving two-wheelers.

Police have conducted special rallies in recent days highlighting the importance and necessity of using helmets.

Narayanasamy himself flagged off one such rally here yesterday.

A spot fine of Rs 100 would be slapped on those found violating the helmet rule, police said.

Attempts were made twice in the past to bring in the compulsory helmet rule, but it was not implemented strictly.

With the ruling coming into force from tomorrow, shops selling helmets witnessed heavy rush since this morning.

AIADMK (Amma) has urged the government to relax the rule and make it applicable only on arterial roads and highways, exempting riders using vehicles for a short distance.
