Tension gripped Shopian township in south Kashmir after clashes erupted between the security forces and the local youth who took to streets bursting crackers and shouting pro-Pakistan slogans to celebrate Pakistan cricket team’s win over Sri Lanka in Champions trophy on Monday night.

The incident occurred in Vehil village late on Monday night when Pakistan cricket team defeated Sri Lanka and entered the Champions Trophy semi-finals. Scores of youth came out of their homes and started celebrating Pakistan’s victory by bursting crackers and shouting slogans.

Security forces immediately rushed to the area to maintain order. However youth pelted stones on the forces triggering clashes. Several people were injured in the action while some of the vehicles were also damaged.

“Miscreants burst fire crackers evoking response from the forces. There were some clashes later,” said Ambarkar Shriram Dinkar, Superintendent of Police, Shopian.

“We are trying to find out the miscreants who pelted stones after the match,” Dinkar said.
