The Centre is working on a programme to make yoga a lifestyle habit for pregnant and lactating women as well as children. The decision was taken by the National Nutrition Council, the inter-ministerial executive committee of POSHAN Abhiyaan (Prime Minister's Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment).

The programme will be carried out by the Union Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy, or Ayush Ministry (AYUSH). It will propagate the idea in modules, which will be customised for the beneficiaries, as per the minutes of the meeting accessed by DNA. The minutes also state that the scheme is "monitored at the highest level by the PMO".

The decision, which comes days ahead of World Yoga Day on June 21, also comes a year after the ministry landed in a minor controversy after the publication of a booklet called 'Mother and Child Care' by the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), an autonomous body under the ministry.

The ministry had said that the booklet had "relevant and useful information" compiled after years of "clinical practice in the fields of yoga and naturopathy". "It aims to take the well-known health benefits of yoga and naturopathy to expecting mothers and new mothers in a simple booklet format," a government release stated.

Representatives of NITI Ayog, Health Ministry, Women and Child Development Ministry, Food and Public Distribution Ministry, and state representatives took part in the meeting. It was decided that the health and WCD ministries will work on updating the Joint Mother Child Protection cards so that it functions as a "common core guidebook and counselling tool".

Apart from that, a nutrition resource network will also be set up by the states and UTs to support the POSHAN Abhiyaan scheme and it will be linked to national and state nutrition resource centres.

THE PLAN

  • The programme will be carried out by the Union Ministry of AYUSH.

  • It aims to take Yoga and naturopathy benefits to expecting mothers.

  • Also a nutrition resource network will be set up to back POSHAN Abhiyaan.
