The cab drivers staged a protest against the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government here on Monday for refusing to grant fresh licenses to app-based taxi services Uber, Ola and TaxiForSure.

The drivers, who gathered at the Jantar Mantar here to vent their ire, said that app-based taxi services had changed their lives and set them from the clutches of the transporters, who used to exploit them.

"I want that Uber app should be allowed to continue. The lives of the drivers have changed because of Uber. Earlier, these big transporters used to exploit us… Now because of Uber, we are owners of our vehicles. Uber has helped us buy our own vehicles at a low cost and has shown us a way in life," said AS Pandey, a taxi driver affiliated to Uber.

The drivers said that app-based services cannot be held responsible for the misconduct of individual drivers. They said that the verification of their background and conduct has been done by the Delhi Police.

"App-based taxi service should be allowed. As far as safety is concerned, all of us have been verified by the police. It is being done by the Delhi Police. Earlier, very few people wanted to enter this profession, but now more than 50% are educated. I am a graduate, I am working with this company and I am earning a good salary, which I cannot earn outside," said another driver Gurpreet Singh.

The move came after a 21-year-old woman had accused a driver of the Uber taxi service of attempting to kiss her after she got off at her destination in Gurgaon.

Delhi's Transport Minister Gopal Rai had on Wednesday accused app-based taxi operators Uber and Ola cabs of "misleading" their drivers and commuters, by not submitting the details of their drivers to the government.

In December last year, a 27-year-old finance executive of a Gurgaon-based company had alleged that the driver of an Uber cab drove her to a deserted place after she fell asleep in the vehicle and raped her.
