Accusing Trinamool Congress of unleashing "a reign of terror" ahead of the civic polls, former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya on Thursday called for united resistance against TMC in order to ensure free and fair elections.

"The politically-cornered Trinamool Congress is trying to spread a reign of terror ahead of the polls. Our party supporters and grassroot leaders might think whether we would be able to put up a resistance against this attack.

"But the fact is only the Left and CPI(M) can stand up and ensure that each and every voter is able to cast his vote," Bhattacharya said in a statement. Bhattacharya urged each and every Left worker to enroll himself as a volunteer to ensure that free and fair polling takes place for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections.

"We won't allow the situation to go into their hands. If needed we will put up a united resistance. Our experience tells us that its people who will have a last word," he said.

Bhattacharya said he was optimistic regarding the outcome of the polls as Left has been going door-to-door and giving a patient hearing to the people.
