What happens when you’re a drug dealer, but want to declare your income tax? It’s a tough situation, but a 34-year-old construction worker learnt the consequences of trying to be honest while committing a crime.

According to a Times of India report, Rachappa Ranga, the accused, who works as a construction worker in Bengaluru, declared Rs 40 lakh as his annual income. He was arrested by the city police for peddling drugs.

The police got a tip-off from the income tax department who informed them that Ranga had not declared the source of his income. He had declared his returns late last year, following which the police began keeping an eye on him.

According to police sources, after the I-T department began scrutinizing his returns, Rachappa, on lawyers' advice, registered himself as a Class I contractor with a few government agencies. He sold at least 30 kg of ganja every month Rs 35,000 per kg.

Police investigation revealed that Rachappa worked as a construction labourer in Bengaluru before taking to peddling drugs in 2013. He allegedly recruited youths as agents and ran a drug-peddling business in the city and earned crores of rupees. He also lived in a villa on Kanakapura Road paying Rs 40,000 monthly rent, owned a swanky car and property in his village.
