Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at Pakistan in the Indus Waters treaty meeting he chaired on Monday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday chaired a meeting to review the Indus Waters treaty with Pakistan amidst heightened tension between two countries. It is reported that PM Modi hit back strongly at Pakistan and said 'blood and water cannot flow together'. According to reports, he also said 'will maximise water usage under treaty.'
Quoting Water Ministry sources, ANI said, "Presentation was given to PM Modi about the implications for India-Pak. You will get to know soon whatever the government decides."
India to expedite construction on 3 dams on River Chenab; Pakul Dul Dam, Sawalkot Dam and Bursar Dam, added ANI. Sources told ANI, that in the meeting chaired by PM Modi, it was discussed that 'India will use fullest legal rights in treaty'.
"India to use potential of 18,000 MW of power from the western rivers under Indus water treaty, construction on Tulbul navigation project to be reviewed by India again, work had been suspended on this in 2007. Inter-ministerial task force for Indian rights, to be formed for western rivers under Indus water treaty," added ANI.
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, the Water Resources Secretary, and senior PMO officials were present at the meeting.
There have been consistent calls in India that the government scrap the water distribution pact to mount pressure on Pakistan in the aftermath of the terror attack. Pakistan has been complaining of not receiving enough water and gone for international arbitration in couple of cases.
Under the treaty, which was signed by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan President Ayub Khan in September 1960, water of six river - Beas, Ravi, Sutlej, Indus, Chenab and Jhelum - were to be shared between the two countries.
