Clashes between the Congress and BJP reached fever pitch in Karnataka on Saturday, as the saffron party accused the Congress government of brazen “minority appeasement.”

The allegations came in the wake of a circular sent to the heads of police in all districts asking for their opinion on revoking cases against members of minority communities in incidents of communal clashes.

The letter drew fire from the BJP with RSS ideologue Rakesh Sinha saying the  Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had “communalised the criminal justice system of Karnataka”.

“His (Siddaramaiah’s)  communal politics has reached disquieting proportions. Law and order is a secular realm and by using religious bias to define and implementation of law and order means debasing both civil society and the state itself. He is trying to appropriate the votes of a particular community by doing advocacy for criminals, terrorists and radicals. His social philosophy is dangerous for the nation in general and Karnataka in particular,” Sinha told DNA.

However, state minister Ramalinga Reddy on Saturday lashed out at the BJP for creating a fuss on the matter. Reddy rubbished reports, saying it was not a circular, but just a “reminder”.

“The BJP doesn’t understand English properly. It’s not a circular, just a reminder. Minority leaders represented that some false cases have been registered against minorities. The IG sent a letter to the SPs, and gave a reminder, that's all,” Reddy said.

The controversy comes close on heels of a bitter spat between Siddaramaiah and other BJP leaders, especially UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath, ahead of assembly polls slated for April or May in the state this year.

The BJP has been alleging for a long time that Hindus were being targeted by the Congress government in a bid to appease Muslims.

Countering the BJP’s charges, Siddaramaiah had recently said that RSS and BJP had “terrorists in their ranks,” thus inviting BJP’s ire. State leader of the saffron party stated that the Congress regime’s appeasement approach had showed that state was going “soft on Islamic extremism.”
