Of the 12.4 lakh students who appeared for Bihar School Examination Board exams, 7.94 lakh failed
Hundreds of students took to the streets across Bihar on Wednesday to protest the poor show in the Intermediate exam results of Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB). At least 64%, of the 12.4 lakh students who appeared, failed their exams.
On Tuesday, the BSEB declared the Intermediate exams 2017 results. While in the Science stream, 30.11% students passed, 37.13% cleared the exams in the Arts stream, and 73.76% passed in the Commerce stream. A total of 7.94 lakh students failed to clear the exam.
Angry over the results, the students went on a rampage outside the Bihar Intermediate Education Council (BIEC) office in Patna, and tried to break open its gates. They burnt an effigy of Bihar Education Minister Ashok Choudhary, pelted stones on police, and raised slogans against the state government and exam board.
Police had to resort to mild lathi charge to disperse the students and control the situation. While some students sustained injuries, few were taken into custody by the police. A number of student organisations of different political outfits also supported the students, and staged dharna in the state capital.
Bihar Education Minister Ashok Choudhary, after a meeting with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on the issue on Wednesday, appealed to the students, to not indulge in violence, and prepare for compartmental exams.
This year’s results have been the worst in the last five years and Board officials attribute the “poor results” to the strict measures put in place to scrutinise the use of unfair means in exams, and the evaluation process.
A compartmental examination has been scheduled for students, who failed, in the first week of July. But, many students claim it will compel them to drop a year as they won’t be able to secure admission in good colleges.
The students are demanding a re-evaluation of the answersheets. “There were reports that answer copies have been checked by middle school teachers because senior teachers were on strike. How can you expect them to evaluate correctly?” a protesting student said.
Even the Intermediate Science (ISc) topper Khushbu Kumari with 86.2 per cent, was not happy with her results, and said there must have been some error in evaluation of her English and Hindi papers, in which she scored in the 70s range. She said she was likely to apply for re-evaluation of these papers as she was expecting her percentage in the 90s range.
Another student said he had been failed in a paper which was not among his examination subjects.
