He was a construction worker and an income of 40 lakh would have been highly unlikely for a man doing such a job. But this is what he told the I-T department in his income declaration for 2017-18.
His honesty cost him dearly.

In a country where only 1.7% of the total population, or 2 crore people, paid income tax, Rachappa was trying to be an ideal citizen. He declared his income Rs 40 lakh. The move backfired badly as it alerted the authorities who found that Rachappa, working as labourer, earned most of his money illegally by selling drugs.

The Koramangala police in Bengaluru arrested Rachappa (34) and his accomplice Srinivas (47) on January 20 red-handed as they were trying to make a drug sale at a hotel. His ganja supplier Sashu escaped and is still absconding.

The police had been keeping watch on him for days after they suspected him to be involved in illegal ganja trade. They were alerted by the Income Tax department who called him for scrutiny as he had not disclosed his source of income.

According to a report by the Times of India, Rachappa had been working as a construction labourer in Bengaluru and took up drug peddling in 2013. Rachappa had come from Pushpapura, Chamarajanagara 12 years ago and now resides off Kanakapura Road in Bengaluru.

He reportedly lived in a villa on Kanakapura Road for which he paid Rs 40,000 rent per month in rent. He also owned a luxury car and properties in his village.

During the raid on the hotel, the police seized 26 kilograms of ganja and Rs 5 lakh from Rachappa.

Rachappa was selling ganja worth lakhs of rupees every month by selling kilos of ganja monthly. He allegedly recruited youths as agents and earned crores of rupees.
