In the run-up to the three-tier panchayat polls in West Bengal, actors-turned-political leaders have started doing their bit of campaigning through films.

TMC MP Deepak Adhikary, popularly known as Dev, released his home production, Kabir, in which he praises Mumbai-Howrah Duranta Express, the train started by then Rail Minister Mamata Banerjee. "This is Mamata Banerjee's train. No stoppage, no drama."

The film is based on communal riots and bomb blasts in Mumbai and Kolkata. In one of the dialogues, Dev, who plays chief of Special Task Force, says, "Danga Hindu ra korena, Muslim ra korena. Danga kore dangabaaz. (Neither Hindus nor Muslims riot. Rioters do it)." The word 'dangabaaz' has been a trademark of the Chief Minister, who uses it to refer to BJP leaders.

Referring to the recent communal flare-ups, Dev said, "I didn't know what I was doing would be the talk of the town at that particular point of time. Being an MP it is my responsibility to spread the actual message. Through this film, perhaps I want to tell everyone that those who spread violence are not members of any particular community," he said.

On the other hand, Gajendra Chauhan, former FTII chairman and senior BJP leader, plays the role of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee in the film, '1946 Calcutta Killings', which was released on Friday. The film portrays the riot in Calcutta in 1946. On his visit to the city on Thursday, Chauhan said the film portrays PM Narendra Modi's development programme.

Incidentally, the bilingual film, titled 'Danga – The Riot', has not been able to be released in West Bengal.

"The Mamata Banerjee government has ensured that the film will not be released here because she doesn't want people to know about the contributions of Mookerjee," Chauhan said. Asked if the film had been planned to be released before the polls, he said, "It is not like that. We have been fighting with the censor board for over a year to get a green signal for releasing the film and we have got it finally."
