Bapu scholar feted by Sahitya Akademi

Suhrud is awarded for translating Dalal’s book in Gujarati on Harilal Gandhi into English.

The relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and his eldest son Harilal Gandhi has intrigued the masses and has influenced many cinematic and theatrical explorations.

Now, it has also caught the attention of India's prestigious National academy of Literature -— the Sahitya Akademi. The biography of Harilal Gandhi written by Chandulal Bhagubhai Dalal in Gujarati which was edited and translated in to English by Prof Tridip Suhrud   'Harilal Gandhi: A Life' has been selected for the Sahitya Akademi award.

Confirming the information, the convener of the English Board North Indian languages department of Sahitya Akademi, Alok Bhalla said, "English translation of Harilal Gandhi's Biography done by Tridip Suhrud has been selected by the jury for the award.

Initially 30 books were selected by a jury of 10 literary experts after which another jury of 5 experts filtered those books narrowing them to 10 books. Out of these 10 books, one work of translation gets selected by a panel of three judges. Translation works on novels based on Tagore's relationships and some other significant works in various other languages were in the race for the award."

Prof Tridip Suhrud is a political scientist and a cultural historian. He teaches at the Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, Gandhinagar.

Interestingly, Prof Suhrud who received the award for translating a book into English had his schooling in Gujarati. He is comfortable in writing and translating in three languages   Gujarati, English and Hindi.

He has translated Ashis Nandy's 'The Intimate Enemy' in Gujarati as 'Antarang Ari', GN Devi's 'After Amnesia: tradition and change in Indian Literary Criticism' into Gujarati as 'Smrutibhranshna Pagle Pagle" and Mahatma Gandhi's 'Hind Swaraj' into Hindi.

He has translated Narayan Desai's four volume biography of Gandhi into English under title 'My life is my message' in 2009. He is presently translating an epic Gujarati novel Sarasvatichandra into English.

Sharing his delight on his work being awarded by the Akademi, Prof. Tridip Suhrud said, "I am very happy, especially because the award has been given to this book. The life of Harilal Gandhi needed recognition and understanding."
