RSS' economic wing Swadeshi Jagaran Manch (SJM) has once again got Niti Aayog in its crosshairs, this time over dubbing as "inflationary" the increased minimum support price (MSP) offered by the Modi government in a pro-farmer push recently.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, SJM national co-convener Ashwani Mahajan complained that reports of NITI Aayog's Member Agriculture, Ramesh Chand, having called MSP inflationary was not only "an insult to the political leadership" but also "ill-informed and malicious".

Stating that SJM was writing with "a deep grouse, feeling of being hurt and utter sorrow", it asked the government to ask Chand to "provide the empirical study, source or minutes of stakeholder consultations done to reach these conclusions" or take "appropriate action".

"We have discussed that MSP keeps farmer and farming alive and, for a long period, has kept encouraging production... The combined effect of the two budget announcements on farm level prices will be about 15 per cent.

Transmission of this increase to wholesale and retail levels will have very strong implication for inflation and consumers," the letter said, calling the statement "blatant lies". It further states: "Finance Minister Arun Jaitleyji in his budget speech committed to ensuring enhanced MSP for farmers. The confusing, malafide and ill-informed statements only add confusion."

"In last three years, there are several evidences coming out of NITI Aayog that force us to believe that the think tank is pushing corporate agenda, in this case, with the suggestion of 'market reforms' in agriculture. It is pushing introduction of future trading in agriculture produce despite the fact that infrastructure is not there."

‘Corporatised’

The RSS’ economic wing criticised the govt think tank for peddling corporate agenda. It said the statement over MSp being inflatinary is ‘ill-informed, malafide’.
