CBI and Interpol officials have decided to take Puneet, an Indian youth arrested here on November 29 to Delhi for further interrogation of his role in mowing down a 19-year-old Australian student and severely injuring another in Australia five years ago.

Puneet, who was arrested by Patiala Police after five -year manhunt, is considered guilty of killing 19-year-old Dean Hofstee and seriously injuring 20-year-old Clancy Coker in a Melbourne road accident.

Both victims were students from Queensland. The accident occurred as he drove his car rashly under the influence of alcohol.

Patiala Superintendent of Police H S Mann said: "Puneet, who is facing two cases in Australia, was arrested by Patiala Police from somewhere in Haryana because he was wanted, because there were warrants issued against him for his arrest through CBI and Interpol. Because there was a red notice issued against him by Australian counterparts. And, that is the cause of his arrest. He has been arrested and produced before the judicial magistrate and has gone into judicial custody in Patiala Jail.

Son of a businessman, Puneet had gone to Australia to study hospitality. He fled the country in 2009 after he was found guilty of negligent and rash driving, resulting in the fatal mishap

He was charged by the Victoria Police with culpable driving resulting in the loss of a precious life and serious injuries inflicted on another

After being arrested in India following a widespread manhunt by the joint efforts of Victoria Police and Indian police, the CBI and Interpol have decided to take him to Delhi for further action

“Now, CBI Interpol parties would take him probably to Delhi based on his production warrant which they are trying to procure at the earliest,” said Mann

Reportedly Puneet had flown back to India using his friend’s passport in 2009.
