Around 20 people have been booked for allegedly assaulting a shopkeeper and ransacking shops in Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh, when he resisted eve teasing of a girl, police said on Wednesday.

A case has been registered against 20 people for creating ruckus at Jhinjhana town in neighbouring Shamli district on Tuesday, Additional Superintendent of Police, V K Mishra said.

The trio of Danish, Wakar and Nofil misbehaved with a girl who had come to buy goods at the victim's shop, he said, adding that the shopkeeper objected to the trio's behaviour following which he was thrashed by them. The trio was later joined by several others in assaulting the victim and ransacked many shops in the area, police said.

Mishra said that the situation was brought under control by the police. Additional forces, including Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been deployed in the area after the incident, he said.

Steps are being taken to arrest the absconding trio, police added.
