Swear and sweat it out, seems to be the takeaway from a new study conducted by researchers at Long Island University and Keele University. They studied around 29 people and found that those who swore during a 30-second stationary bicycle test had a 4.6 increase in power, while those who yelled profanities during a grip strength test saw an 8.2 per cent spike. David K Spierer, a professor of sports sciences at Long Island University and co-author of the study, said, this happens because swearing is an effective distraction during difficult exercises, something fitness experts seem to agree with and echo.

The real deal

While the study published in the Journal of Psychology of Sport and Exercise, draws a connection between using profanities and how it benefits strenuous workouts, experts in the field seem to have a different perspective on it, concluding it’s a natural tendency that most people unconsciously veer towards. Celebrity trainer, Yasmin Karachiwala, puts it down to being a way to vent. She says, “When people lift heavy weights, they do end up swearing out of frustration but it’s not something they do consciously. It’s a natural reaction. I don’t see a connection between swearing and how it can improve a workout, that is something only scientists can figure out. However, when you swear, you are letting out all that pent-up frustration. For instance, when you are lifting heavy weights, you need a lot of strength and motivation to exert that kind of pressure. Swearing may help in that case as it lets you focus on that, but I believe it’s a natural tendency for people to swear when extremely frustrated, without really being conscious about it improving workouts.”

Namrata Purohit, celebrity trainer and Pilates expert, adds, “If the findings have shown a co-relation between swearing and it improving your workouts, there must be some truth to it. However, what I have observed is when a person is doing a strenuous exercise, he unconsciously may end up using a swear word in frustration. Personally, I don’t really think it improves a workout. I just feel it’s something that comes naturally.”

Clearly, both agree that swearing does help let off steam, and help take off the edge and momentarily cloak the pain that one is experiencing while working out. While they may not be on the same page when it comes to it powering and improving workouts, they do agree it’s a natural tendency that helps you power through a strenuous exercise routine.
