Mother of a new-born baby was left forlorn, after a woman cheated her and whisked away her baby. The incident occurred at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) on Tuesday.

On March 10, Sarasawati Naskar, resident of Maniktala in North Kolkata, gave birth to a male child. She was in the maternity ward at the Eden Building of CMCH. She said that on Tuesday, a woman had come to her saying that Naskar would have to go for some check-ups.

"She asked me to follow her with the baby and we went to a room with a glass enclosure. She asked the security guard for a doctor. The guard said the doctor was on the floor above. We went there and she asked me if I had got the blood test done. I said yes and she took the baby from me and told me to go back and bring the blood report. When I returned with the report she had vanished with my child," Naskar said.

The incident happened around 12 noon on Tuesday. Panic-stricken, Naskar called up her family members who came over and an altercation followed with the hospital superintendent Sikha Banerjee. When police came to the rescue of Banerjee, they came under fire from Nasakar's family and friends. The incident triggered a lot of tension within the hospital campus. Agitators got into a noisy brawl with police personnel as they attempted to bring the situation under control.
