After the sets of Padmavati were vandalised and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was attacked, the film’s shooting has come to a standstill. The cast and crew has returned from Jaipur (where the film was being shot) to Mumbai and the next plan of action is being drafted. Meanwhile, the first question in the mind of many in the trade is: Will the film manage to keep its release date?

Immediate challenges

Padmavati is a multi-crore film. A regular Sanjay Leela Bhansali film is mounted at no less than Rs 100 crore and every set and on-location shoot costs a bomb. It is a big loss when there is a change in even a day’s schedule. In Jaipur, a big disruption took place and the entire schedule was cancelled. Now SLB will  have to build new sets, and actors’ dates have to be matched,” rues an industry source.

Other than the challenge of ensuring that there is peace ahead, the makers also need to quickly work around the schedule, fix the damaged set and ensure that there are no continuity problems or other issues.

Dates not a dilemma

Says another source, “Dates should not be an issue since Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor are exclusively working on the film.” Our source adds, “They do not have any other film starting soon. Bhansali always procures bulk dates from his actors and from that perspective, there is nothing to worry about.” Padmavati is still around 10 months away (the film releases on November 17) hence reworking the overall schedule should not be an issue either, since a lot can be covered in quick time.”

Keeping morale high

A veteran producer, who has faced similar issues with his period film, says, “However, the major challenge would be to keep the morale of the cast and crew on a high before hitting the sets.”

An observer comments, “That is always the biggest factor to consider, especially what has happened  and with so much heat around the film. Bhansali will most certainly be keeping a tab on the security, especially after the manner in which the attack took place with so much audacity, what with the entire episode been filmed as well. He would definitely not be comfortable looking over his shoulders while calling the shots.”

Deepika, Ranveer or Shahid — each will be keeping their fingers crossed that such an ugly incident doesn’t take place ever again right through  filming.

No repeats

“The entire team just needs to hope and pray that there is no repeat of such an incident ever again, be it during the shooting or the promotions. Let’s not forget that there would be a lot of visits that Bhansali as well as his cast would have to make to various cities in India closer to the release. Hopefully, the matters would be taken care of and this issue would be diluted by then,” adds an observer.
