Masters of Sex will reportedly not return next year as the show has been cancelled after four seasons. Showtime has opted not to pick up the period drama series starring Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan for the fifth season, reported Ace Showbiz.

The cancellation comes just after the show, based on Thomas Maier's biography of the same name, concluded season 4 on November 13.  An official announcement is expected to be made sometime soon.

The show revolves around the story of Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson, two pioneering researchers of human sexuality who are trying to save their practice. Although it earned the network several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, the ratings had been modest since its 2013 debut so the studio boss felt there was no need to add another chapter especially after the couple finally tied the knot in the final episode of the last season.
