Pune-girl Mansheel Gujral makes her place in the reality show India's Raw Star. The show is an unconventional singing reality show consisting of 10 contestants, which will have Yo Yo Honey Singh as their mentor. Mansheel, who is a sound engineer also, speaks about her musical aspirations.
How did you get initiated in music?
I started singing at the age of seven. My family is into music big time and they made me listen to all genres of music. I sang in school, college and everywhere possible, so all I know is singing. Though I have not taken training in any particular genre, I always listened to music a lot... be it jazz, folk, classical, or Punjabi music. I also make it a point to travel a lot from where I pick up influences.
How was it working with other contestants on the show?
All of us are not new in this field and in some way or the other we have been associated with music for the longest time. Since, everyone of us come from varied backgrounds, it is interesting to see what each one of us has to offer. The show is very different where everybody gets a chance to show their creativity.
You have spent your growing years in Pune, has the city and its culture influenced your music?
Absolutely! Pune as a city is very culturally vibrant and is a hub for talented artists. I have been attending the annual music festival of Savai Gandharva since I was a kid and the city has a big hand in grooming me as a musician.
You have already sung for a movie and cut a single, can we expect an album from you anytime soon?
Well, I am going with the flow as of now, focusing on training with other contestants. I am open to collaborations with other artists as it is a great learning experience. But coming to your question, a full-fledged album is not in the pipeline as of now, but I am working on one thing at a time.
