Film: Bachchan
Cast: Sudeep, Bhavana, Tulip Joshi, Parul Yadav
Director: Shashank
Rating: 3 and 1/2

Bachchan can quite easily be considered as one of the most stylish films to have graced the screens in recent years. In fact, it may not even be an exaggeration to say that this film will add one more feather to Sudeep’s hat. Director Shashank, who made his debut in Sandalwood with Sixer once again proves his ability to handle the megaphone, quite adeptly at that.

The film begins with a posse of policemen chasing Bachchan (Sudeep) for having purportedly killed police inspector Mahesh Deshpande (Ashish Vidyarthi) and Dr Srinvasa Iyengar (Nassar) in broad daylight. The police succeed in nabbing Bachchan and at this rather interesting juncture, the director chooses to stop and take the story back to where it all begins.

You learn that Bachchan is actually Bharath, the managing director of Bharath Real Estate Services who helps a couple sell  their bungalow. This seemingly simple affair ends up ruining it all for Bharath as he gets embroiled with Jayaraj (Ravishankar) who is hell bent on creating problems for the couple. To top that up, inspector Deshpande and Dr Iyengar ruin Bachchan’s relationship with Anjali (Parul Yadav) in their own scheming ways.

Enter special investigation cop Vijay Kumar (Jagapathi Babu) who interrogates Bachchan. As the story progresses, there are interesting twists that are thrown in that manage to keep you hooked.

For instance, Bachchan’s admitted to NIMHANS hospital only for the cops to later find out that he was pretending to be mentally ill.

Vijay Kumar also learns that Bachchan’s true love is Ashwini (Bhavana) and not Anjali.

There’s more to the story than this and we’ll leave it to you to watch the movie to discover the suspense.

Now, as far as performances are concerned, Sudeep is at his best in everything- from action to emotion and romance.

The scenes where Sudeep and Parul Yadav quarrel especially are a treat to watch. Sudeep’s dialogue – Baggisukondu baggiskondu hodithini – manages to draw whistles from the audience.

Among the heroines, it is Bhavana who walks away with all honours. Sadhu Kokila and Bullet Prakash are expectedly funny.

Besides the heroines, the film is quite loaded with the bad guys too. Ravishankar, Nassar, Ashish Vidyarthi and Pradeep Rawat play the villains and among the lot, it is Ravishankar and Ashish Vidyarthi who shine.

The icing on the cake of this already entertaining movie is the item song, Mysoorpaakalli totallaagi yeshtu... by Daisy Shah.

Where the first half of the film is racy, we wish the director had taken a little bit care to retain the pace of the second half. Doing so would have had Bachchan walking away with the ‘best film’ title of this year, yet. But don’t let this minor drawback discourage you. Bachchan’s a must watch.
