We are trained from childhood to be achievers. Earlier it was limited to the male child but now even girls are encouraged. The dna Ican is a beautiful concept because only when you say 'I can', will you be able to achieve it. And when it comes to fitness, which is what the marathon signifies, nothing is impossible. We always come up with excuses like 'I can't do it because I don't have the time' or 'I am not fit', but there's always a starting point for everything in life.
I think the best way to start is with a brisk walk or running. There's nothing better than that. I have always been a supporter of marathons because it teaches you a different kind of running, something you build on. Incidentally, running is one of the best exercises. It is the best way to build immunity and curb lifestyle diseases. It keeps cholesterol and diabetes in check. I think everybody must include running as part of their fitness regime.
I have osteoarthritis and I have to take care of my knees. So, I do sensible cardio. My fitness mantra is to love myself. I love the life I live. God has blessed me with the body and I have to take care of it. I invest in my body and health by taking out one or two hours every day for myself. I do pilates and weight training.
One person who comes to mind when you talk about marathons is Milind Soman. He is not only fit, he is very inspirational, has the right posture and form, and has been running in different cities. Several people look fit but a marathon requires a different kind of fitness.
For women who are running the marathon, I will simply say you can. You have already made the first effort the fact that you are taking part is a good start. Even if you walk through it it's fine. Set your own standard and compete with yourself. And, every year build up on it.
