Two days ago there were reports of Kamal Amrohi’s son Tajdar Amrohi selling the rights of his father’s immortal classic Pakeezah to Pakistani actress Meera. Needless to say, she wishes to cast herself in Meena Kumari’s role.
One now hears that Meera has approached Sanjay Leela Bhansali — no less — to direct her proposed remake of Pakeezah. Says a source from SLB’s office, “Sanjayji has received an SMS from Meera saying she has the rights of the film and would like him to direct it. He was very surprised to hear this since he regards Pakeezah as one of those classic films that can never be remade.
There is not a frame in Kamal Amrohi’s work that SLB would dare to touch. Sanjayji excused himself from the offer as he is busy with Ram Leela.”
In a related development Kamal Amrohi’s son Tajdar has completely denied giving the remake rights of his father’s classic to Meera.
When asked about Meena Kumari’s proposed metamorphosis into ‘Meera Kumari’ Tajdar replied, “No no no, I haven’t sold the rights of Pakeezah. My brain is still functioning normally and very well. Maybe I’d commit such a blunder if I go insane.”
