Christmas might still be a few weeks away but from the looks of it, Santa Claus is visiting a little early. And what’s more, you get to meet Cinderella as well!

A story about hope, joy and love, mixed with a whole lot of magic, Santa Meets Cinderella is a wonderful little tale, where the latter’s life is transformed not by a Fairy Godmother but by the lovable man who goes about distributing goodies to the world — Santa! The spin on the classic tale has been put together by Vishaal Asrani and Jiji Subi for Vishaal Asrani’s Institute of Performing Arts (VAIPA).

When we watched the play last Saturday, the auditorium was filled with kids and adults alike, who couldn’t wait for one of their favourite fairy tales to begin. And once it started, they felt sorry for Cinderella, laughed at the antics of her stepsisters, and clapped and sang along to the songs. Brownie points for the wonderful costumes and stage props. Some of the magical moments — especially when Cinderella’s maid costume turns into a beautiful ballgown — are wonderfully executed, eliciting a ‘wow’ from the audience.

Tia Advani, the ninth grader from BD Somani International School, who played the central character, is a talent to watch out for. The youngster, who has earlier played the role of Dorothy in an adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, is confident and stays in character even when the spotlight is not on her. A special word also for the actors — Ananya Panchal and Anurag Jha — who played the stepsisters, Bentley and Mercedes respectively.

A scene from the play

While it is a children’s play, even the adults, including yours truly, were thoroughly entertained. ‘Tis the season to spread joy and that’s the message one takes back from the musical. It reminds us that where there is love and hope, there is always room for a little magic!

Catch the fun Christmas musical on Dec 1 at 5 pm and Dec 2 at 12 pm at Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir, Bandra.
