A showman, a risk-taker and a passionate artist, Raj Kapoor was celebrated as an actor, director and producer of Hindi cinema. To mark his 91st birth anniversary today, let us take a look back at some of the classics he gave us:

1) Awaara (1951): After sharing screen space with Dilip Kumar in Andaaz, this was Raj Kapoor's first stint as a lead actor in Hindi cinema. He played the role of a poor 'Raj' who becomes the victim of class struggle. The movie is remembered for its universal theme. Kapoor's performance in Awaara was ranked as one of the top ten greatest performances of all time by Time magazine.

2) Shree 420 (1955): Donning a tramp look and portraying a common man, this 'Charlie Chaplin' of Hindi cinema amazed audiences with his performance. It is also considered as one of the most romantic movies of Indian cinema, starring the hit pair of Raj Kapoor and Nargis. Also, who can forget the famous song- 'Pyaar hua ikraar hua..'

3) Jis desh mein ganga behti hai (1960): Delivering yet another thrilling performance in this film, Raj Kapoor skillfully portrayed the tragedy of the tribal class and their sufferings caused by the Government. The movie is still known for its impressive locations, excellent camera work and some interesting choreography. Kapoor's role as the 'ideal son of Mother Ganges' is still appreciated.

4) Sangam (1964): Starring Raj Kapoor, Vyjayanthimala and Rajendra Kumar in lead roles, this first colour film of Raj Kapoor showed various shades of humanity through friendship, love and during fulfilling a relationship like marriage. Not only are its songs listened to and enjoyed till date, but the filming and the stylish get-up of the stars is also noted. This was also the last successful movie for Kapoor in which he had acted.

5) Mera naam Joker (1970): Taking six years to film his dream movie, Raj Kapoor made sure he could do everything to bring it closer to the standards of Hollywood. However, in spite of grand sets, amazing performances and inspirational value, the movie could not attain commercial success on box- office. Yet, it is still remembered as a cult classic from Raj Kapoor's repertoire.
