One such historical figure whose story has often been told on the silver screen, both in Hindi and English, is the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. On his death anniversary, we take a look at some films that portrayed 'Bapu' on screen-
Gandhi (1982)
The list must begin with Richard Attenborough’s Oscar-winning film Gandhi. It is considered to be one of the best films made on Indian Independence, keeping this freedom fighter's struggle to bring India independence in focus. British actor named Ben Kingsley even won an Academy Award for seamlessly pulling off the role of Gandhi in this biopic.
Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2010)
This may be one of the most popular and entertaining portrayals of Gandhi in recent times. A sequel to the previous hit film Munna Bhai M.B.B.S, the film had a unique take on the concept of 'Gandhigiri'. Marathi actor Dilip Prabhavalkar's plays Gandhi, who appears in Munna bhai's hallucinations and coaxes him to do good. The portrayal was both funny and poignant.
Hey Ram (2000)
Some films tried giving the audience another perspective of Mahatma Gandhi and Hey Ram was one of them. A revenge saga by a victim of partition, this critically acclaimed Kamal Hassan-starrer beautifully portrayed the divergent set of opinions a man like Gandhi elicited. Naseeruddin Shah as 'Gandhi' did a wonderful job in getting the Gujarati accent and the body language of the Mahatma right.
Gandhi, My Father (2007)
This Anil Kapoor film focussed on Gandhi's personal life instead of his political one. The film was from the perspective of his son Harilal Gandhi (played by Akshaye Khanna) who believed that despite being the ‘Father of nation’, Gandhi (played by Darshan Jariwala) failed to be a good father to him. Though it received a mixed response, the film received the National Award in the same year and does a great job at showing another side of Gandhi.
Sardar (1993)
The film primarily revolves around the life of freedom fighter Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. It essentially highlights how both Patel and Gandhiji together strived for India's freedom where Patel, who first mocks at Gandhiji's non-violent methods to attain independence, later understands its significance after listening to one of his lectures. It is a great take on understanding the ideologies of two of the greatest leaders of India. Annu Kapoor played Gandhi while the role of Sardar Patel was essayed by Paresh Rawal.
The Making of the Mahatma (1996)
What made the Gandhi a 'Mahatma'? This is revealed in a biopic by Shyam Benegal in which actor Rajit Kapur flawlessly portrays a young Gandhi during his time in South Africa. The film is based on Fatima Meer's book The Apprenticeship of a Mahatma.
