With the deaths of several teenagers across the country suspected to be linked to the Blue Whale Suicide challenge, parents across the country are now planning to organise mass awareness campaigns.
The India-wide Parents Association (IWPA) has already started spreading awareness about the hazards of the game via social media. The association now plans to conduct awareness drives in over 15 states.
“The craze for this game seems to be spreading at a very fast rate among young children. As parents, there are a lot of concerns that we have about how to keep children away from falling prey to this challenge. We have already started spreading awareness with the help of social media forums and various messaging applications about ways in which parents can ensure their child’s safety. The association will soon also organise a series of awareness drives across the country. Cyber experts will be invited to speak to parents, teachers, school managements etc, on how to address this menace and keep children away from it,” said Anubha Sahai, President, IWPA.
The campaign will run in several major cities including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chandigarh. “We plan to work on multiple levels so that children from the country stay away from this menace,” Sahai said.
Recently, Union Minister for Women & Child Development Maneka Gandhi wrote to schools across the country, asking them to take immediate steps to protect children from the Blue Whale challenge. In a letter dated August 31, Gandhi said she had asked the Ministry of Information Technology to find a technological solution so that downloading of this game could be prevented.
The most recent suspected case related to the challenge is the death of a 17-year-old boy who committed suicide by standing before a running train in Damoh district of Madhya Pradesh.
