After the roof of a popular open-air rooftop eatery in Connaught Place fell off on Saturday, the restaurant has been shut until a safety audit of the place is conducted. This was the second incident of a roof collapse in the British-era shopping arcade since February 2.

The roof adjacent to Cafe Unplugged Courtyard (UC) located in L-block in the middle circle collapsed around 9.30 pm. No injuries were reported however.

The rooftop had already been sealed by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) among the 21 rooftop pubs it shut down after the first collapse in C-Block.

The pub-owners in the area have been protesting the move and plan to meet the NDMC chairman in the coming week. The Connaught Place Restaurant Association (CPRA) had claimed that it may move the court if the civic body does not allow terrace dining and makes them run a loss.

"We have shut the restaurant for safety reasons till the investigation is complete. However, once the civic body is through its structural safety assessment of the buildings, they must allow rooftop dining. We are going to meet the officials again for the matter in the coming days," said Dinesh Arora, founder UC and vice-president of CPRA.

Amid fears of more such mishaps taking place, the NDMC is carrying out inspections of all the heritage buildings in CP to check their structural capacity.

"Our team is doing a survey of all the buildings. Till the survey is complete we cannot say if we can allow rooftops to be opened or we may have to revoke their licenses altogether," said a senior NDMC official.

The civic body had constituted a six-member team of experts including engineers from IIT-Delhi to conduct a comprehensive study of the structures built in 1933 and their condition at present.
