Despite the stern opposition and protests by residents, the Noida Authority has started dumping waste at the disputed landfill in Sector 123 which the Authority described as a sanitary landfill site and not dumping ground.

On Thursday, around 70 trucks of waste were dumped at the site from across the district, while the Authority will soon establish the waste-to-energy plant to treat the garbage.

Meanwhile, dumping the waste at Sector 54 continues irrespective of the National Green Tribunal's interim order to stop dumping waste and any garbage there. Following which, the residents had filed contempt of court case against the Noida Authority with the NGT for continuing dumping at the sector.

However, the residents blocked the road at Parthala Chowk to protest the dumping of waste. They also raised slogans against the state government and the local administration. The locals have announced their decision to approach the NGT and the High Court regarding this issue.

"We will make a human chain and not let them dump the garbage here. With the dumping of the garbage, lives of around 5 lakh people will be at stake," said a protester.

"In future, it can become dangerous just like the Ghazipur landfill site. We will not let the Authority set up a landfill in this area at any cost. We are still preparing the documents and evidence for our case and will soon apply in the NGT," said Abhay Pandey, a resident.

According to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, a landfill site should be situated at a distance of 100 meters from a riverbed, and 200 meters from water bodies, highways, habitations, public parks and water wells.

Rajesh Singh, Officer on Special Duty of Noida Authority, said that they have always followed the NGT order and rules. "The contempt of court case filed by the residents is not the reason behind the start of dumping at Sector-123. We already had plans to start dumping at Sector-123."

On Thursday, the NGT has issued contempt of court notice against the Noida Authority to stop dumping at sector 54. The next hearing is scheduled for July 19.
