The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has arrested three men including a Delhi University graduate from West Jyoti Nagar area of Shahdara district on Monday and claimed to have busted a fake call centre racket that duped more than 4,500 people across India by organizing fake lucky draws and offering expensive mobile phones at cheap rates.

According to the police, the accused have been identified as Sanjay Panchal (22), a DU graduate, Nikhil Soni (22) and Kunal (18), both high school pass-out.

"On December 22, 2018, we received information about a fake call centre being run in East Delhi area. Our team had been tracking them and they were not being traced because they frequently changed their location. On Monday, we received specific information about their hideout and all the three were arrested in a raid," said Rajiv Ranjan, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch).

During investigation, the accused disclosed that they duped people on the pretext of a lucky draw under which expensive mobile phones were offered for a sum of Rs 4,550 and when the customer placed an order, an empty parcel or a dummy phone or even stones would be sent to them through post office on cash on delivery.

"We were able to find the details of more than 4,500 people across the country who were cheated by them. The exact amount of the fraud is yet to be ascertained," said Ranjan.

The police said that they have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

"More arrests are likely with the recovery of fake parcels as the raids are still going on at various places in Delhi and its neighbouring cities. We have recovered 30 mobile phones, a computer, empty parcels and incriminating documents at the location," said Ranjan.
