In order to catch up with the millennial generation technology, many senior citizens have finally started using smartphones but most of them need guidance to get familiar with the latest technology.

Ajay Kumar Gupta said, "I can barely use it (smartphone) even though I've had it for the past three-four years. My younger brother demanded that I buy a smartphone so it would be easier to communicate through Whatsapp, which is the only application I can use other than calling."

In order to bring in this familiarity so that they are in a position to make use of the technology to their best advantage, the Delhi Police organised a Cyber Safety and Digital Awareness Programme for Senior Citizens which saw a participation of as many as 1,800 senior citizens from all corners of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) and about 50-60 of Delhi Police officials at the Siri fort Auditorium on Thursday. The chief guest of the evening was Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, the minister of state (home affairs) and a prominent member of the Bhartiya Janata Party.

The event commenced at 4:20 pm with a basic introduction to cybercrimes and cyber safety tips. Informative handouts on cyber threats and safe online habits were given to all the attendees.

A cyber forensic van with a portable smartphone and harddisk forensic tools for onsite investigation was launched by the minister of state along with the information shared about the Himmat application for women's safety and an all-women patrolling squad on busy as well as deserted streets at night.

Members of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) were invited by the Delhi Police to interact with the audience on the aspects of UPI and BHIM applications.

Anjana Saxena was not very pleased with the event and said that she already knew most of what had been shared from the dais."I had come here in hopes of gaining more knowledge about the UPI and BHIM applications, but it was very basic seeing that most of the crowd is illiterate,"she said.

During the end of the programme, Amulya Patnaik, the Commissioner of Police informed the audience about the various steps taken by the Delhi Police to help and guide senior citizens through cybercrimes which included the district cyber cells, training of over 1,800 investigating officers and the launch of the cyber forensic van. He announced the initiative wherein officers were trained to interact with senior citizens and assist them through safe online activities, including downloading of safe applications.

The programme ended around 5:15 pm after which the question and answers session started wherein the audience participated actively and officers of cyber crime cell as well as NPCI and Center for Development and Advanced Computing (CDAC) addressed the queries of senior citizens on cyber threats and safe online habits.
