Following the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) landslide victory in the municipal elections, the Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) in the city have stated that they will closely monitor the activities of new councillors as this is the last chance for BJP to fulfil its promises.

Fighting a strong anti-incumbency factor, the BJP routed other Opposition parties — AAP, BJP, and debutant Swaraj India — to win the municipal elections for the third consecutive time.

BS Vohra, President of the Delhi Bhagidari Scheme, said it was high time that BJP did something about the age-old allegation of corruption in civic bodies. "There was no opposition to the BJP. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been making false promises to the people, as a result of which it has been punished. Now, the BJP will have to fulfil all the promises it made during the elections. This is the last chance given to them by the public. If the promises are not fulfilled, the voters would sway in favour of other parties," Vohra said.

Matters related to sanitation and cleanliness have remained the major issues during this election in the city that grapples with the mosquito menace and resulting diseases on an annual basis.

Rajiv Kakria, member of an RWA in south Delhi, said BJP won because of the Modi-wave and, if the councillors do not work properly, the PM would be answerable.

"I am dazed at BJP's victory. People have voted for Modi and if their expectations are not met, the PM would be answerable. I think the distribution of tickets to new faces has worked for the party. Also, people have seen what AAP did in the last two years and the mandate has been delivered," Kakria said.

Echoing Kakria's sentiment, Saurabh Gandhi, General Secretary of the United Residents of Delhi, said people voted for Modi and were affected by BJP's national impact.

"Since the Kejriwal government has always indulged in a war with the Lieutenant General and the Centre, people thought that AAP is not working. That is why they brought BJP to power once again. We want our grievances addressed and the city to be clean and green," Gandhi said.

Now, members of various RWAs are looking forward to a monthly meeting with councillors, as promised by BJP during campaigning
