North Delhi: Woman killed by collapsing windowpane

A 40-year-old woman died after the window pane of a shop collapsed on her on Thursday. The shop was situated in a dilapidated building in north Delhi's Burari area, police reported.

The deceased has been identified as Sandhya Devi. The police said she was buying fruits in the crowded Samy Nagar market at around 12.30 pm on Thursday when the window pane fell on her.

A case has been registered under death due to negligence and act endangering life and personal safety of others at the Burari police station, although no arrests have yet been made.

Sandhya lived with her husband Sanjeev Kumar and their two daughters in Burari. Her 18-year-old daughter who was with her at the time of the incident told the police that the building had cracks from the outside, and had it been repaired on time, her mother may have still been alive.

Sandhya was rushed to the Sushruta Trauma Centre, where she was declared dead on arrival. Her husband Sanjeev said he is thankful his daughter is alive and safe.

The family collected her body after a post-mortem, and the last rites will take place in their native village of Bijnor.
