Even as east Delhi residents continued to bear the stink of uncollected waste lying on streets for the sixth day straight, the authorities and the striking municipal employees failed to reach a common ground on Tuesday.

Amid conflicting reports regarding the status of the strike, the corporation authorities claimed that the employees have been paid two months’ salaries. The employee union members, however, said the money has not reached their accounts. They also reiterated that they will not return to work till the government paid their long-pending arrears.

The areas under the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) produce nearly 2,200 metric tonnes of waste daily. “We will continue the strike till thousands of employees get their dues. We are not given salaries for three to four months at a stretch. Besides, arrears of five years and pensions of four years are pending,” said Sanjay Gehlot, President of the MCD Swachhta Karmchari Union.

East Delhi mayor Satya Sharma claimed the employees had to go on a strike because the Delhi government has not released enough funds. In June last year, the workers of the north and the east Corporations had called for a strike.

A senior Corporation official said: “We had met Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday to discuss the issue, but he gave no assurance regarding the release of funds.”

According to the civic officials, the Delhi government owes Rs4,928.76 crore to the Corporation.

Meanwhile, the east Corporation officials said they hired private trucks on Tuesday to lift the garbage. “A total of 563 metric tonnes of waste was by 28 trucks,” they said.
