With no headway made in the missing Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student case even after over two months, the Delhi Police are now analysing his social media profile. Cops have also written to the Facebook authorities in an attempt to get some clues.
Najeeb Ahmed was active on Facebook till a week after he went missing on October 15. He even chatted with some of his contacts. The police are now trying to get the details of the locations from where he logged in to his FB account. Sources said he was an ‘extrovert’ in the virtual world.
Cops said there were two Facebook profiles by the name of Najeeb Ahmed and both were active soon after he went missing. One profile has no picture while the other one has a picture of a musician.
The Facebook profile with the musician’s image was last updated on October 12. The message stated: “Najeeb Ahmed was feeling ‘missing’ with Pooja Singh and 12 others in Badaun City (UP).” His cousin Sadaf Musharraf claimed that this was his real Facebook profile, which also had Urdu couplets talking about “loneliness”, “love being a blessing”, and about not being able to find a long-lasting friendship.
The Delhi Police had earlier identified a doctor in Vimhans hospital who had prescribed anti-depressants and sleep-inducing medicines to Najeeb, stating that he was suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and depression.
Najeeb’s family, however, claimed that he did not not contact anybody after his disappearance. “We don’t think he was upset or depressed. He spoke about bringing sweets for his friend in his last post,” Sadaf said.

Meanwhile, continuing with their efforts to trace the missing student, the Crime Branch sleuths carried out search operations with the help of sniffer dogs in the JNU campus and finished scanning residential complexes and other areas around the campus on Tuesday evening. In the two-day search, the police officers went through every nook and cranny of the campus. Some cops even patrolled on horses to make sure that no part of the sprawling campus was left unattended.
Najeeb, 27, a resident of Badaun district in Uttar Pradesh and a first-year MSc student at JNU, went missing on October 15 after a scuffle with some ABVP members the night before. The Delhi Police have announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for anybody with information about him.
