By the month end, some Metro stations in Delhi-National Capital Region will restrict passengers from carrying heavy luggage in the trains. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is compiling a list of around 15 stations that will not allow passengers to carry more than 15 kilogram luggage with them.

The DMRC had held the drive in around five stations on a pilot basis a few months ago. It will be extended to as many as 15 Metro stations, including New Delhi Railway station by the end of February. Commuters travelling with bags weighing more than 15 kg will be turned away from security checkpoints. While people with small bags can travel on the Metro train, the DMRC has finalised the dimensions of bigger bags which should not be more than 25 cm in height, 60 cm in length and 45 cm in breadth, and weigh not over 15 kilograms.

According to DMRC officials, the rail body is not banning bags on the trains but only restricting the oversized ones. "More than 28 lakh people use Metro on daily basis. During peak hours, oversized bags cause inconvenience to others in the bogey. We are only trying to address this problem. Besides, we have been receiving complaints of frequent breakdown of bag scanners because of bulky luggage," said the official.

The new move, however, will affect thousands of commuters who board the Airport Line as New Delhi Railway Station is the starting point of the line. In Noida, Botanical Garden and in Gurugram, Huda City Centre are the two stations that will not allow passengers with more than 15 kg bags.

The stations that have been shortlisted by the DMRC include New Delhi Railway Station, Anand Vihar, Chandni Chowk, Barakhamba, Azadpur, Badarpur, Chawri Bazar, Dilshad Garden, Govindpuri, Karol Bagh, Indralok, Lal Qila, Nangloi Railway Station, Huda City Centre and Botanical Garden.
