After the humiliating defeat in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken on Wednesday offered to step down from his post.

The BJP is leading over rivals Congress and AAP in 180 wards in MCD polls, with trends still coming in that hint at a landslide victory for the party.

Speaking to the media, Maken said, "I take responsibility for the party's defeat and I am going to resign as Delhi Congress President."

Further stating that for one year he will not take up any post in the party, he said, "I will continue as a party worker"

"We have made a reasonable comeback, but I had hoped to do better," he added.

He also said that the Election Commission should check EVMs. "If we can't trust EVM, we must trust EC," he said.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Jagjivan Sharma said that Maken has resigned owing moral responsibility for the party's poor show in the MCD polls.

However, he said that it would be wrong to say that Congress would have fared better under the leadership of Sheila Dikshit.

"We fought a brave and commendable battle with Maken in charge. No particular person possesses the Midas touch to run a party home to victory."
