Ghaziabad may soon get a whole new life in terms of cleanliness, as the city is about to get its first 'Garbage transfer centre', allowing the city to get rid of garbage houses, which will be set up across the city to make every locality garbage free.

After the meteoric rise in the ranking of cleanliness survey, Ghaziabad has introduced various measures to make the city the best in the nation. However, the latest in those, Garbage transfer centre will take away the burden from the government. These centres will transport garbage to waste to energy plant, eliminating the expense of maintaining garbage houses from the chain.

Divided into various phases, the first phase of the initiative will allow authorities to construct ten such centres at the cost of Rs 12 crore.

While the city has shown tremendous improvement in terms of its cleanliness ranking, as it jumped from 351 positions from last year to 36th position this year.

According to CP Singh, Municipal Commissioner, the city generates more than 1,000 metric tonnes of garbage every day. After the door to door collection, they are kept in the garbage houses. Then, the garbage is taken to dumping grounds in vehicles.

However, in the latest process, garbage collected from houses will directly be taken to garbage transfer centre where it will be compressed and later transported to waste to energy plant.

"After door to door collection, the vehicles will take the garbage directly to garbage transfer centres. Then, the garbage will be kept in the containers where it will be compressed by application of pressure. Later, big vehicles will take compressed garbage to waste to energy plant," added Singh.

Once the process ends, Ghaziabad would get rid of over 1200 garbage houses, which have been spread across the city to collect and store garbage.
