Carrying the emotional weight of their stories, the farmers who participated in the protest march on Friday in the national Capital hoped to make themselves heard by other comrades and the media.

Ramaswami Sella Perumal had traveled all the way from Trichy in Tamil Nadu covering a distance of over 2,400 kilometre to seek justice for his family. His relative Krishan Kumar (45) had committed suicide in Thottiyam (Tamil Nadu) after failing to pay back a sum of Rs 50,000, which was given to him by the government. The Chief Manager along with goons had reached their residence and had insulted Kumar and his wife Rani (35) demanding a return.

“They asked his wife why she was wearing a saree and told the couple to eat human waste. He immediately rushed to the bank and drank poison in front of thousands of people. Later, the manager informed the police and arrested his wife. The woman could not even mourn the death of her husband,” said Perumal.

Rani, along with Perumal and thousands of other farmers, had visited the national Capital earlier when the farmers had protested at Jantar Mantar for 144 days. The farmers later contributed to help Rani set up a small shop in order to feed her two children. “We are asking for food and clothes. Is that too much to ask for from the government?” he asked. “We are ready to work but the government must do something,” he added.

Carrying skulls in their hands, and a green stole around their shoulder, Tamil Nadu farmers have always caught the eye during farmers protests.
