In a unique initiative, the Students Union of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) kicked off a mass fund collection drive on Friday night in a bid to retain the studentship of around 30 students. These 30 students were fined and barred from registering themselves for the next session on the basis of the ongoing internal inquiries against them.

Wearing masks of Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar, the students alleged that the administration had denied their request to prepone their inquiry. "We are collecting money to ensure that no Union member or student activists pay the fine on their own," JNU Students Union (JNUSU) general secretary Satarupa Chakraborty said.

"We are wearing these masks to demonstrate how the VC and the JNU administration are trying to extract money from the students," she added.

"We conducted an emergency meeting of the student council last night and decided that other councillor and union office bearers should retain their studentship at the earliest in order to take the struggle forward," Pandey said, adding it was decided that he, as the president of the student union, will not pay the fine but fight for the registration.

Officials at the proctorial office, however, claimed that the registration of those who are guilty of breaking 'code of conduct' of the University can never be allowed to register until they complete their enquiry and submit the fine.

Calling it harassment, another student said all her inquiries by the Proctor's Office will take place from 3:30 pm onwards on July 26, the time and date when registration closes for the old students. "How am I supposed to register myself after that even if my inquiry gets done and my registration gets unblocked?" She asked.

Students led by the JNUSU, are also going to organise a protest march in campus on Sunday demanding the immediate registration of all students.
