Thirty five days after Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed went missing under mysterious circumstances, the varsity students' union on Sunday alleged that the administration was trying to "shield" the ABVP members accused of assaulting Najeeb, by "hiding" the proctorial inquiry report in the matter.

"A proctorial inquiry report, released on November 7, holds the ABVP members, including Vikrant Kumar, guilty of hitting Najeeb and making derogatory comments against him. Following the release of the report, Vikrant and others were asked to reply within seven days. It has been more than seven days but the administration is silent," said JNU Students' Union President Mohit Pandey.

"Why hasn't the report been made public yet? It raises many doubts regarding the administration's intentions," he added.

Najeeb, a first-year MSc student at JNU, has been missing since October 15 following an alleged altercation with some ABVP activists the night before at the Mahi Mandavi hostel.

According to a notice issued by the proctor's office on November 7 , Vikrant Kumar of the Mahi Mandavi hostel had hit Najeeb and used derogatory language against him on October 14. "Vikrant must reply to the office within seven days of the receipt of this letter, failing which it will be presumed that you have nothing to say in your defense and the office will be free to take appropriate action against you," the notice stated.

The BJP-affiliated ABVP, however, has called the report "biased and politically- motivated". "We feel that the proctorial inquiry is biased and politically motivated. Sending notices to anybody in Najeeb's absence is a faulty way of concluding and shows fear on the part of the Chief Proctor, who has meekly surrendered to the pressure exerted by the Left-dominated JNUSU," said Saurabh Sharma, ABVP activist and former Joint Secretary, JNUSU.

Meanwhile earlier in the day, Najeeb's family and some JNU students met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow to seek his intervention in the matter. "We informed him about the demands of #JusticeforNajeeb and the inactivity of the Delhi Police and JNU administration. We also requested him to explore the possibilities of administrative intervention in looking for Najeeb," Pandey said.

"He promised us of taking every possible measure to trace Najeeb's whereabouts and also said that he will explore the possibilities of UP government's intervention," said Najeeb's brother Akhdas Musharraf. The family members, in the past, have also met Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung and Leader of Opposition in the Parliament Ghulam Nabi Azad, among other leaders, seeking their intervention in the case.

Last month, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to trace Najeeb following the Home Minister's directions.
