A head constable of Delhi police was shot dead by unknown assailants in South East Delhi's Jaitpur area late on Tuesday night. Prima facie it appears that head constable Ram Avatar had spotted some persons carrying out suspicious activities in the area. He was shot at when he confronted the assailants. So far the accused men have not been identified. "He has given his professional best to the Delhi Police and thus has been an asset to the force," said Vijay Kumar, DCP, South Delhi

According to police, Meena was deployed at the Leela Hotel for security arrangement from 8 am to 8 pm. After finishing his duty, Meena reached home, when his wife Guddi Devi sent him errands to get some flour.

As per police, Meena went to the flourmill to get the flour around 11 pm. Barely 150-metre away from his house, Meena was shot dead by unknown persons. His motorcycle was found parked on the side and the keys were in his pockets. One of the locals spotted him and made a PCR call at 11:30pm. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Sources stated the involvement of minimum two persons and maximum four. "Meena was a true cop and would not tolerate any anti-social elements. He would always go and question them. Since he had parked his bike and had locked it, we suspect he might have spotted some persons and when he went to question then he was fired upon," said the source.

Meena had also arrested around six proclaimed offenders during his tenure. The police is investigating angles of personal enmity. The bullet penetrated Meena's stomach and ruptured his liver, which eventually led to his death. The bullet wound was caused by a country-made pistol.

Meena a 2003 batch officer was posted at the Ambedkar Nagar police station in South Delhi. He hailed from Karouli in Rajasthan. The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem and his final rites will be held in Rajasthan.
