First-year student in speeding BMW mows down man in DU's North Campus

The man was trying to cross the road when the incident occurred; the student has been released on bail

Police, on Friday night, arrested a student who mowed down a 50-year-old man, threw him metres into the air. The impact killed the man on spot. The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon, when the student was driving his BMW car in Delhi University's North Campus.

The student was later released on bail, police said. Police officers said they managed to nab the accused through the help of CCTV footage from the area and by tracing some parts of the car which were found at the spot. The accused is said to be a student of Delhi University's Khalsa College. The deceased, a vagabond, who has been identified as Shiv Nath, was trying to cross the road when he came in front of the speeding vehicle at around 1:30 pm on Wednesday. Locals told police that the impact of the accident was such that the man was thrown in the air.

As locals gathered on the spot, the Police Control Room (PCR) was called and Nath was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. A crime team that had arrived at the spot immediately checked the CCTV footage from the vicinity and found that it was a BMW sedan, police said. Cars of similar make were soon zeroed in on. Speaking to DNA, DCP North, Jatin Narwal, said the footage also showed the vehicle was speeding towards Kirorimal College from the Kamla Market side.

"Local inquiries led to the identification of the car and a police team then found the owner. On inspection it was found that parts of the car's body, which were recovered from the spot, were missing from the car, which the police had zeroed in on. On questioning the accused, it was revealed that he is a student of Delhi University. He was arrested and the vehicle was seized," said a senior police officer. The family of the deceased was informed about the accident and his body has been sent for post mortem.
