It was Dr Himbala Taneja's last day at work on Saturday when she got into the car with six other friends from work at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), which rammed into a truck on the Yamuna Expressway, killing her and two other doctors and leaving four injured. The 25-year-old had resigned from work a few weeks back to do her post-graduation. Her last rites were performed on Monday in her hometown in Yamuna Nagar in Haryana.

Taneja had done her MBBS from Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences and was working as a non-academic doctor at AIIMS. Taneja was alive even after one-hour of the accident and could have been saved had there been a well-trained patrol team or availability of medical help.

Late on Sunday night, the bodies of all the three young doctors were sent to their respective hometowns that all reached their homes between 9 and 10 am on Monday morning.

"First Dr Harshad Wankhede's body was sent at around 11:30 pm, with three boxes of his stuff that I collected from his rented apartment in Delhi, including all his certificates. Dr Yashpreet Singh's body followed at 12 midnight to leave for Fajilka in Punjab and then Himbala's at 4 am. The idea was that all the bodies reach their homes around the same time," said Dr Rajeev Ranjan, MD in Lab Medicine and Secretary of Resident Doctors' Association, AIIMS.

Wankhade's motorbike, collected from his apartment has been brought to AIIMS and parked outside the hostel to be collected by his cousins later.

The four injured doctors – Catherine Halam, Mahesh Kumar, Jitender Mourya, and Abhinava Singh – are recovering at the Jai Prakash Narayan Trauma Center, AIIMS. Catherine had suffered from a hip dislocation and facial fractures, and was operated by a team of doctors. She has now been shifted to the Intensive Care Unit and will take at least a week to get discharged. The other three will be discharged in the next three days.

All the seven doctors were from the same batch at the Department of Emergency Medicine, AIIMS and had completed their shift together.
