Expired beer causes stomach issues: Doctors

In the wake of a recent finding by the Excise Department where nine restro bars at prominent locations in the national Capital were found to be serving 'expired' beer, doctors say that these expired alcoholic beverages can cause stomach ailments which can lead to bloating. Doctors advise consumers to check the expiry date on the bottle before consuming the beverages..

During surprise inspections at the hangout spots in New Friends Colony, Connaught Place and Hauz Khas, among others between August 2017 and April 2018, the Excise Department found that all were serving beer which were past the expiry date based on the written advice.

"Any edible content consumed after the expiry date can cause irritation and bloat in the bowel. These served alcohols are nothing, but fermentation that can lead to stomach troubles. While most of these bottles are tightly capped thus not much oxidation occurs and a couple of months after the expiry date does not have any side effects," said Dr SP Byotra, Senior Consultant, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.

In a written response to a question asked by Aam Aadmi Party MLA Vishesh Ravi in the Delhi Assembly, the Excise Department said that 214 pubs, bars, and restaurants were inspected by its enforcement branch during the past year and of these, 94 restro bars were found violating excise rules.
